How many tags hang on a garment looks like a design decision, but three things decide it first: how the channel receives stock, who carries the compliance information, and how many units that extra few cents per set gets multiplied by. Getting the set right affects margin more than how beautiful a single tag looks, and it survives inspection better.

This guide splits the hang tag set into four parts: what each component carries, how to set the piece count by channel, where the cost actually goes, and which information must never live on a hang tag alone.

1. What a Hang Tag Set Usually Contains

Component What it carries Common build Required?
Brand tag Brand, line name, positioning Art card, cotton or specialty paper, with foil, emboss or spot UV Yes
Price ticket Retail price, barcode, SKU Small art card or synthetic stock on the same cord, tear-off Depends
Composition and care tag Fibre content, care method, origin Can print on the tag reverse, but most markets require a separate permanent label
Belly band Line story, size, gifting feel Kraft or fine art paper wrapped around the folded garment Optional
Sticker or seal Size, tamper evidence, unboxing Coated self-adhesive, or low-tack removable Common in e-commerce

2. Piece Count Follows the Channel, Not Taste

  • Department stores and multibrand boutiques: brand tag plus a tear-off price ticket that leaves no residue — adhesive ghosting on the tag gets the shipment refused
  • Own-chain retail: pricing lives in the system, the tag carries only a barcode or SKU — a printed price ticket just adds re-pricing cost
  • E-commerce and live selling: fewer pieces read cleaner — a brand tag plus a size sticker is enough, and every extra tag looks like clutter on camera
  • Cross-border export: the brand tag can be bilingual, but composition and care belong on the permanent label, and importer name and address must follow the destination market
  • Outlet and discount: you need a price ticket that can cover the original figure — a price printed permanently is dead stock the moment a promotion starts

3. Where the Money Actually Goes

Paper and printing on a single tag are rarely the big line in the set. What separates quotations is the piece count, the attachment method and the labour: two tags per garment nearly doubles threading time, and that cost usually never appears on the quotation.

  • One tag, one cord: cheapest and fastest when shade and size match, right for basics and large runs
  • Two tags on one cord: saves cord but needs two holes, and they must align — otherwise the threading line reverses the pair
  • Plastic fastener: the fastest way to attach, but some markets scrutinise plastic hardware — confirm the destination rule before export
  • Bagged set: usual for premium and gift boxes — the cost sits in labour and the bag, not the tag
  • Spares: allow 1–2 % — threading damage and inspection samples consume them, and air-freighting a top-up costs more than the tags

4. Dividing the Information: A Tag Cannot Replace the Care Label

The commonest mistake is printing fibre content and care instructions only on the hang tag. The tag comes off at the point of sale — it is a removable carrier; the EU, the US, Japan and others require that information to stay with the garment permanently. The hang tag sells the garment; the care label keeps it wearable.

  • Permanent label: fibre content, care symbols or wording, origin, importer or responsible party as the market requires
  • Hang tag: brand, line, price, marketing copy, QR code — it may repeat permanent-label data but cannot replace it
  • Childrenswear: small parts and cord length face extra limits — an over-long tag cord is treated as a safety hazard

5. Assembly, Packing and Preventing Mismatches

  1. Assemble the set before cartoning, bag by size, and never ship loose tags for the factory to thread
  2. Across sibling SKUs, avoid near-identical tag colours — separate them by a colour code or back-side code that survives factory lighting
  3. Before dispatch, pull five sets and check colour, language and barcode against this order
  4. At season or price change, consume old tags before new ones arrive — mixed batches put two prices on the same rail
💡 Tip: draw the set as an assembly sketch — how many tags, how many holes, which cord, which tag sits on top — and send it with the shade references. Say two tags per set verbally and roughly three batches in ten come back reversed.
