A garment belly band, also called a paper band or seal band, is a strip of paper wrapped around a folded garment to hold it together and present the brand and size. Common on shirts, knitwear, towels, loungewear and gift sets, it offers a larger, bolder canvas than a hang tag and solves two problems at once: keeping the garment folded and putting the brand front and centre.

A well-made belly band improves both unboxing and shelf presence; a careless one slips off, comes unglued or creases the garment. The sections below cover material, structure, printing and eco options so you can lock the details at sampling.

1. What a Belly Band Is and Where It Is Used

A belly band is usually a long strip of card wrapped around a folded garment and glued where the ends overlap at the back or side; some are supplied pre-formed as a loop. It works both as a belt that holds the fold and as advertising space for the brand.

  • Shirts and polos: hold the collar and body, keep the fold closed
  • Knitwear and sweaters: stop the folded piece from loosening or losing shape
  • Towels, bathrobes and loungewear: set packaging with a gifting feel
  • Gift sets and e-commerce bundles: replace a plastic tie and cut plastic use

2. Choosing Material and Grammage

MaterialCharacteristicsBest for
Coated paper 250–350gsmVibrant colour, fine printRetail brand bands
Kraft paper 200–300gsmNatural look, eco-friendlyOrganic and eco brands
Recycled cardCan carry eco certificationBrands with strong sustainability goals
White card / one-side coatedHigh stiffness, holds shapePremium gift boxes and sets

Too light and the band sags and curls, looking cheap; too heavy and it will not hug the fold and springs back. Most garment bands sit well at 250–300 gsm, while gift-box pairings can go up to 350 gsm.

3. Structure and Size: From Flat Strip to Loop

The flat, wrap-and-glue band is the most economical: the ends overlap and are fixed with adhesive or hot melt. The pre-formed loop slides on and holds itself, a better experience at slightly higher cost. The sizing formula is simple: band length equals the circumference of the folded garment plus overlap, with overlap normally 20–30 mm.

  • Flat self-adhesive: peel-and-stick overlap, low cost, good for volume
  • Pre-formed loop: ready-made ring, slides on and holds, better customer experience
  • Button or magnetic closure: opens and re-closes, for try-on or repeated packing
  • Die-cut window: reveals the logo, size or inner hang tag, adding depth

4. Printing and Finishing

  • Full-colour printing: for multicolour graphics, gradients and photos
  • Spot colour: more accurate brand colour and smoother large areas
  • Foil stamping / embossing: adds a premium feel, suits a minimal luxury look
  • Matte / soft-touch film / spot UV: affects feel and glare, so check compatibility with eco and recycling goals

5. Eco Options and Compliance

  • FSC-certified or recycled paper to back up your sustainability claims
  • Soy-based or water-based inks to cut VOCs and odour
  • Avoid PVC lamination; prefer unlaminated or recyclable film for easier paper recycling
  • Trim paper use and size to cut material and shipping volume directly

6. Sampling and Ordering Checklist

  • Measure the circumference of the garment as actually folded, not flat
  • Confirm overlap, adhesive type (self-adhesive or hot melt) and whether pre-forming is needed
  • At sampling, wrap it on the real garment to check for slipping, creasing and the right tension
  • Think about shipping and storage: will it deform under stacking, or should it ship flat and be formed on site
💡 TAGE tip: most belly band sizing failures come from calculating circumference on a flat garment. Tell us the folded thickness and how tight you want it, and we will work out length and overlap from the real item, sampling in 3–7 days.
