Hang Tag Edge Painting: Gold, Silver and Coloured Edges Explained

Hang tag edge painting — also called edge colouring or edge gilding — puts a band of colour on the cut edges of a tag, in gold, silver, black or a brand shade. The face of a card is flat; a painted edge adds thickness, hand feel and perceived value, which is why premium apparel brands, gift-boxed lines and limited editions use it most.

It is also one of the higher-rework steps in tag production: cracked edge paint, uneven colour, stacked tags sticking together, powdering after folding — nearly all of it traces back to parameters that were never pinned down. This guide covers the three processes, when they pay off, how to hand over artwork, how to inspect, and how the cost is built, plus a checklist you can paste into a request for quotation.

1. The Three Main Ways to Colour an Edge

The same band of colour can be produced in several ways, each with its own look, yield and price. Regular shapes — square, round — are the easiest; die-cut or irregular shapes almost always need a dedicated jig, which changes both cost and lead time.

2. When an Edge Is Worth the Money

• Premium and gift-boxed lines: a gold or silver edge lifts perceived quality more than adding another foil block on the face
• Series differentiation: changing only the edge colour separates seasons or years without new dies or plates
• Thick or laminated board: above 600g, or duplexed stock, cut edges expose a white or grey core — edge colour covers it
• Where to skip it: very long storage (oxidation, tags sticking), infant products (coating safety) and ultra-cheap quick-response lines

3. Handing Over Files and Parameters

• Edge width: 1–3mm feels best; past 5mm it reads as a border rather than an edge
• Safety margin: keep artwork 1.5–2mm from the trim so colour cannot run into copy
• Die line on its own layer: irregular shapes need an inset die line and safe zone so the supplier can estimate yield
• Registration tolerance: state ±0.5mm or ±1mm; on thick board and irregular shapes allow ±1mm
• Colour reference: supply a Pantone number or a physical chip; metallic edges can only come close, never match a printed Pantone exactly

4. Four Tests Before You Approve a Shipment

1. Fold test: bend any edge through 180° and look for cracking, lifting or powdering
2. Rub test: 20 strokes with white cotton or an alcohol pad to check colour loss and bleeding
3. Stacking: leave tags stacked for 24 hours, then check for sticking or transfer marks
4. Shade check: pull five tags per batch and compare with the approved sample under standard light

5. Cost, Minimum Order and Lead Time

The structure is simple: one extra pass plus a dedicated jig or screen. Jigs and screens are one-off charges that thin out over volume; unit price follows the number of painted edges, metallics cost more than solid colours, and four painted edges cost clearly more than two.

• One-off charges: irregular-shape jigs and screens are billed separately and can be reused on repeats — confirm who stores them
• Unit pricing: per edge plus number of colours; four edges is the most common and most expensive, two end edges is the compromise
• Volume and yield: painted edges yield less than plain printing, so start at 2,000 pieces or more and allow 3–5% overs
• Lead time: regular and metallic edge samples in 3–7 days; irregular shapes need a jig first, then 10–20 days for bulk
