Hang tag size directly drives printing cost, attachment method and overall look: the same artwork feels completely different on 35×70mm versus 60×100mm. This guide covers standard hang tag sizes, weight and thickness matching, custom die-cut shapes, and bleed and safe margins — so you pick the right size the first time.

2. Matching Size to Hang Tag Purpose

There is no absolute standard, but one rule works in practice: the more information and the higher the brand positioning, the larger the hang tag. First list what must appear — brand name, logo, composition, origin, barcode or QR code, care hints — then estimate the space you need.

  • Brand name and simple visuals only: 35×70mm is enough and cheapest
  • With composition, origin, barcode: go for 40×90mm or 50×90mm
  • Anti-counterfeiting and QR marketing: 54×90mm or larger, with a clean scan zone
  • Custom shapes: the more complex the die-cut, the lower the sheet utilization and the higher the unit cost

3. Custom Die-Cut Hang Tags: Shape Is the Brand

Custom die-cut hang tags are punched into specific silhouettes with a steel-rule die — a low-cost, high-recognition brand hook. Rounded corners, half-circle windows, garment silhouettes and product shapes (shoes, hats, bags) are all possible; kids' wear and streetwear use them most.

  • Rounded rectangle: the safest custom start, string-friendly
  • Garment silhouettes: T-shirt or dress shapes echo the product
  • Cutouts: interior windows reveal the fabric underneath for depth
  • Custom shapes need substance: below 300gsm they warp easily, use 300gsm or more

4. Bleed, Safe Margins & the Hang Hole

Whatever the size, file specs decide the finished quality. Follow these three rules when sending files to your supplier and you will avoid most rework:

  • Bleed: at least 2–3mm on all sides; 3mm+ for custom shapes
  • Safe margin: keep text and key graphics at least 5mm from the cut edge
  • Hang hole: at least 5mm from the edge, 3–4mm diameter, matched to the string

5. Common Size Mistakes & Selection Tips

The most common mistake is designing first and picking the size later: compressing a large layout wrecks typography and white space. Choose the size first, then design to it. Another trap is chasing big sizes — with little content, a large tag just looks empty.

💡 Tip: Use one visual system with several sizes: 35×70mm for basics to control cost, 60×100mm for gift sets to impress — the same artwork needs only minor adjustments, and most suppliers can handle it.
