Many clothing sellers do fine on their own store, then get suspended, penalised or rejected in bulk the moment they list on Amazon, TikTok Shop, SHEIN or Temu. The cause is often not the product but the clothing label: platform rules are usually more granular than country regulations, because the platform also uses labels to identify SKUs and trace complaints.

This guide breaks down clothing label requirements on the major platforms: what platforms actually look for on a label, how hang tags and care labels should divide the work, how barcodes and poly bag warnings are handled, and what space to ask your supplier to reserve up front.

1. The Platform Logic: Identification, Compliance, Traceability

Understand these three layers and you can predict what a platform will flag, instead of guessing after a suspension.

  • Identification — barcodes and item codes let warehouses and systems recognise which SKU, size and batch an item belongs to (Amazon FNSKU, TikTok Shop SKU, SHEIN and Temu supplier codes)
  • Compliance — fibre composition, care instructions, country of origin and responsible-party details required by local law, checked at listing review or during spot audits
  • Traceability — batch codes and manufacturer or importer details so the platform can trace responsibility after a quality complaint, which is why codes are often required on the hang tag itself

The conclusion is blunt: platforms want more than a compliant label — they want one that systems can read, regulators can check and complaints can be traced through. The robust split is legal data on the care label, brand identity and platform codes on the hang tag.

2. Amazon: FNSKU, Durable Labels and Poly Bag Warnings

  • FNSKU barcode — every unit entering FBA needs the Amazon-generated FNSKU label; the original manufacturer barcode must be fully covered, since two visible barcodes cause scan conflicts and unfulfillable stock
  • Brand must match the listing — the brand name on hang tags and main labels has to match the listing to avoid information-mismatch flags; when you show two languages, keep the brand spelling identical in both
  • Apparel compliance data — the US market requires fibre content, care instructions and country of origin attached permanently (sewn care label, woven label or durable print); a hang tag can supplement but not replace it
  • Suffocation warning on poly bags — plastic bags above a certain opening size must carry a suffocation warning telling users to keep them away from babies and children and not to use them as toys; bags without it can be refused at receiving, and it is the most overlooked rule in apparel
  • Carton labels — outbound cartons need the platform's carton label with shipment and contents details; mixed and single-SKU cartons follow different rules, so confirm before packing

3. TikTok Shop, Douyin and Other Social Commerce

  • Seller and category registration — complete entity and category filing before listing; apparel categories usually require a test report or declaration of conformity, and the product name on it must match the hang tag and care label
  • Listing must match the physical item — if a short video or title says pure cotton, the label must read 100% cotton; performance claims such as no pilling also need backing, or they count as false advertising
  • Kidswear and innerwear face stricter rules — children's garments and next-to-skin items usually involve a higher safety class and warning requirements, so reserve label space for safety class and age suitability

4. SHEIN, Temu and Platform Models: Template-Driven Labels

  • The platform template rules — these platforms issue a fixed label template covering supplier code, style number, barcode, size, composition and care symbols, each in a set position; changing the layout usually means re-filing
  • Test first, list later — items must pass composition, colour fastness and formaldehyde testing before listing; test samples should come from the production batch and the label composition must match the sample
  • Barcodes are mandatory — they are usually issued or governed by the platform and must be printed or applied to every item and pack; homemade barcodes risk scanning failures and being voided

5. Platform Comparison: What Each One Watches

Platform Label focus Common rejection cause
Amazon FNSKU barcode, durable compliance label, poly bag suffocation warning, carton label Missing FNSKU, conflicting manufacturer barcode, no suffocation warning
TikTok Shop / Douyin Brand, composition, test report, listing matching the physical item Video claims contradicting the label, no test report, unfinished category filing
SHEIN / Temu Platform label template, supplier code and barcode, passed testing Layout off-template, no testing, unscannable barcode
Own store (Shopify and similar) Local regulatory data plus returns and contact information Missing importer or EU responsible-person details, unclear returns wording

6. Six Things to Fix on the Supplier Side

  1. Reserve space early — tell your supplier up front where barcodes, QR codes and batch codes will go, so nothing gets covered by a sticker later; a white reserved panel keeps scan contrast high
  2. Barcode print quality — blurry edges and weak contrast block scanning, the classic case of a correct label that still fails; sample with the real barcode and actually scan it
  3. Code mapping — hang tag, care label and platform SKU codes must map one to one, and sizes must follow the destination market's convention rather than mixing US, EU and Asian sizing
  4. Printed or stickered — codes that never change are best printed on for a cleaner finish and less labour; codes that vary by batch, such as lot numbers, are better left to a sticker area
  5. Bags and inner packaging — confirm warnings and vent holes on poly bags and mailers, and make sure packaging branding never contradicts the label data
  6. Keep a label file — archive each style's label proof, barcode artwork, composition basis and test report number, so you can answer a platform audit or complaint within hours
💡 Tip: Platform policies change often, so treat this as the shared logic and common requirements rather than a snapshot. Always check your seller dashboard for the current version — and if we lay out your label to a platform template, send the template file (PDF, or a screenshot with dimensions) to avoid rework.

7. How TAGE Can Support You

Dongguan TAGE Packaging makes hang tags, woven and main labels, care labels, poly bags, eco paper bags and brochures. For e-commerce sellers we set labels out to platform templates, print barcodes and QR codes directly onto hang tags, run variable batch coding, and confirm bag warnings at sampling stage. OEM/ODM and made-to-sample work both welcome; sampling in 3–7 days, bulk in 10–25 days, with flexible MOQs (hang tags from 2,000–3,000 pcs as a trial, woven labels from 1,000 m, care labels from 300–500 pcs).

Need a label version your platform will accept? Send us the platform template, your SKU coding rules and your hang tag and care label quantities — we handle layout, sampling and bulk, and can supply both trims together.
