A hangtag is the last brand impression before the customer touches the garment — it hangs at the collar and shapes the first judgment of quality. Clothing brand hangtag design is more than printing a logo: size, information and visuals must work together to carry the brand image while meeting the practical needs of shelf display and e-commerce shipping.
This article walks through every decision point — size, information structure, visual rules and finishing — so you can design your hangtag with confidence.
1. Start With the Size: Standard or Custom Die-Cut
Size determines information capacity and cost. Standard sizes — 35×70mm, 40×90mm, 50×90mm, 54×90mm — cover most garment categories with mature dies and fast lead times. For stronger recognition, choose a custom die-cut shape: rounded corners, garment silhouettes or tag-shaped designs — but this requires a new die, with a slightly higher MOQ and unit price.
2. Decide What Information Goes on the Tag
- Brand identity — logo and brand name, the stars of the tag
- Product info — style number, size, color, price (optional)
- Brand story or selling point — a one-line slogan or material highlight that makes the tag speak
- QR code — website, social account, authenticity check or video; remember to keep the quiet zone
More information is not always better. Keep the front restrained, move secondary content to the back, and keep a clear hierarchy so customers find what they need at a glance.
3. Visual Design: Typography, Color & Whitespace
- Typography — use no more than 2-3 typefaces and create contrast between headline and body
- Color — lead with brand colors, keep to three color families or fewer, and avoid a cheap look
- Whitespace — whitespace is not wasted space but a source of premium feel, especially for high-end lines
4. Let Finishing Bring the Design to Life
| Finishing | Best For | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Foil stamping (gold/silver) | Logos and brand names | Metallic shine, refined and eye-catching |
| Embossing / debossing | Premium, tactile designs | Tactile depth, quietly premium |
| Spot UV | Graphic highlights | Glossy accents on a matte surface |
| Lamination | Prints that need protection | Scratch resistance and better feel |
Prioritize your finishes: highlight one or two techniques per tag — too many compete for attention.
5. Design File Requirements
- Use CMYK color mode and at least 300dpi resolution
- Keep 3mm bleed on all sides and at least 5mm from text to edge
- Convert fonts to outlines so no glyphs are missing in production
- Put the die-cut line on a separate layer and label front and back clearly
