Tyvek and washable kraft paper are the two materials drawing the most attention in garment hang tags right now: impossible to tear by hand, water-resistant, sewable onto the garment, and without the plastic feel of PVC. For outdoor, workwear, denim and sustainability-led young brands, they are the one card besides coated paper that can carry a brand attitude. But printing and finishing on both materials differ completely from ordinary paper: choose the wrong process and you get ink rub-off, foil peeling off in sheets, and white creases at every fold. This guide covers material behaviour, printing compatibility, which product categories justify the cost, and five details that go wrong most often.

In one line: Tyvek is paper made of plastic, washable kraft paper is cloth made of paper. The first resists tearing through a continuous fibre web, the second gains softness and flex from latex impregnation.

1. What the Two Materials Actually Are

Tyvek is made from high-density polyethylene fibres laid by a flash-spinning process and bonded under heat; the fibres overlap continuously, so it cannot be torn and must be cut or die-cut. It is waterproof, resists acids and alkalis, sheds no lint, and originated in medical packaging, building wraps and courier envelopes. For hang tags, 75, 105 and 144 gsm are common, the heavier the stiffer. Washable kraft paper is wood-pulp paper soaked in natural latex and dried; usual thicknesses are 0.55, 0.7 and 0.8 mm, it feels like thin leather, softens with washing and creases naturally — that worn-in look is exactly why brands choose it.

💡 Tip: neither material should be marketed as compostable or 100 percent recyclable. Tyvek is a plastic with poor acceptance in recycling streams; washable kraft contains latex that most paper mills refuse. Claiming durable, reusable and less single-use waste is safer and survives European and North American green-claims scrutiny.

2. Matching Printing and Finishing

The surface energy and ink absorption of both materials are far from coated paper, so the process must be agreed before bulk production; discovering it at trial run means new tooling.

  • Tyvek has low surface energy, so standard offset inks do not anchor: use UV digital, screen or flexo. If you insist on offset, corona-treat or prime first, and run a 3M tape test on the sample.
  • Foiling needs a dedicated low-temperature, low-pressure foil; foil made for paper peels off Tyvek in sheets. Washable kraft foils reliably, but excess pressure leaves shiny marks.
  • Die-cut on a platen press with sharp blades. Laser cutting slightly yellows Tyvek edges, while washable kraft takes a caramel edge that plenty of brands ask for on purpose.
  • Crease whitening: repeated folding on the same line turns Tyvek white. Keep fold lines off the copy, or replace folded corners with punched holes or a shaped cut.
  • Holes and stitching: add eyelets or reinforcement patches on both materials, and sew with ball-point needles at roughly 3 mm pitch so the needle holes do not line up into a tear line.

3. Which Categories Justify the Cost

Material cost typically runs several times a coated-paper tag of the same size, and printing plus finishing adaptation stretches sampling, so these suit higher-priced or story-led products: outdoor and shell garments, workwear and denim, streetwear and collaborations, sustainability-led young brands, and anything where the tag is meant to be kept as a bookmark, warranty card or accessory tag.

Conversely, fast fashion and high-volume low-price lines do not need it: shoppers will not pay more for a tag, but you will pay more in cost and lead time. For campaigns, giveaways and promotional price points, coated or recycled paper is the honest choice.

4. Five Details That Go Wrong

  • Ink rub-off: from under-cured ink or no surface treatment. On receipt, press 3M tape down and peel; white showing through is a reject.
  • Foil peeling in sheets: foil type does not match temperature and pressure. Ask the factory for a foil adhesion test with the sample, not just a pretty sample.
  • Crease whitening: place fold lines in blank areas, or drop the fold entirely and hang the card from a punched hole.
  • Torn holes: holes under 3 mm with cotton string hanging long-term will tear. Always add eyelets or open the hole up.
  • Green claims backfiring: a material is not a certification. Washable is not biodegradable, and recycled content needs paperwork, or European and North American buyers will ask you to pull the claim.

5. Specs to Confirm Before Ordering

  • Weight or thickness: quote Tyvek in gsm and washable kraft in millimetres; the two are not interchangeable.
  • Colour: Tyvek is usually natural white, with colours printed as a solid flood; washable kraft can be dyed, with natural, black, brown and army green as stock shades.
  • Print method, number of colours, and whether a white underlay is needed — light ink on a dark material always needs one.
  • Finishing: gold or silver foil, embossing, screen print, laser engraving, and the fold style — none, half fold, or a shaped cut.
  • Hole position and diameter, eyelets or not, string or elastic included, and whether a matching sewing thread is needed.
  • Quantity and sampling lead time: both materials often need dedicated stocking, so small trial orders run longer than standard paper stock — confirm up front.
