Tamper-evident packaging is the cheapest and most overlooked part of apparel packing: a seal costing a few cents decides whether the customer can confirm on opening that the garment was never opened or swapped. For brands running flagship stores, counters and gift boxes, tamper evidence is both a defence against pilferage and return fraud and the first impression of the unboxing. Seal stickers, brittle paper labels and VOID reveal-message seals each suit different substrates and situations, and choosing the wrong material leads to rework: residue that will not peel cleanly, a message that transfers too faintly, or failure in heat and cold.
1. Decide First: Which of Three Problems You Are Solving
- Pilferage and diversion: stock swapped for cheaper goods, seconds or counterfeits at store or warehouse level; a broken seal leaves the evidence you need to assign responsibility
- Return fraud: online returns are the highest-risk step; a numbered seal plus an unboxing video reduces disputes about a returned item not being the original
- Brand protection and unboxing ritual: a seal printed with the brand turns the first opening into a brand touchpoint; on gift boxes and niche labels it is often seen before the hang tag
2. Six Common Options Compared
| Option | Material | Typical position | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| VOID reveal-message seal | PET or paper face stock with a release-layer message | Poly bag mouth, paper bag mouth, box closure | E-commerce despatch, return verification, counter packing |
| Brittle paper label | Brittle paper stock that tears on removal and cannot be reassembled | Carton closures, shoe boxes, export cartons | High-security closures destroyed on opening, logistics handovers |
| One-time pull-tight plastic seal | PP or nylon with a numbered tag | Zip puller, bag mouth, garment rail | Premium garments, sample shipping, retail anti-theft |
| Cord lock with numbered seal | Nylon cord with a plastic or paper numbered tag | Zip puller, bag mouth, gift box ribbon | Small-batch premium, bridal and bespoke |
| Shrink film seal | POF, PE or PVC shrink film | Outer wrap of multipacks, boxed sets, trays | Bulk despatch, warehouse consolidation |
| Tamper-evident carton tape with barcode | Paper tamper-evident tape, pressure-sensitive tape | Outer cartons, bulk bags, courier closures | Warehouse handovers, store receipt, cross-border direct despatch |
3. How VOID Seals Work and Three Selection Details
- How it works: when the label is lifted, the face stock separates from the release layer, leaving the pre-printed VOID or already opened message as adhesive residue on the surface; it cannot be wiped off or reinstated, which is what makes it stronger than an ordinary seal
- Detail one: match the adhesive to the substrate. PE and PP bags are low-surface-energy materials needing high initial tack, while paper bags and laminated boxes are the opposite — too strong an adhesive tears the fibres, so test on real samples first
- Detail two: match the material to the environment. Hot humid sea freight, cold winter warehouses and alcohol wiping in stores all affect performance, and plasticiser migration on PVC can make the message fade — validate early on such substrates
- Detail three: define the message. Beyond the standard VOID you can print already opened, a brand logo or custom wording; combining a QR code with VOID lets anyone scan to check the batch, which also helps after-sales checks
4. Working With Hang Tags, Care Labels and QR Codes
- One numbering system: seal numbers, hang tag QR codes and carton barcodes sharing a single series let you trace any damage or return back to the batch and station
- Unboxing sequence: the customer peels the seal, then reads the hang tag, then the care label — so the seal should carry a restrained brand mark rather than a wall of text
- Evidence for returns: write the seal number into the returns policy and pair it with an unboxing video requirement, and disputes need almost no back-and-forth
5. Design and Printing Points
- Size and shape: a bag-mouth seal must cover the true sealed zone; too narrow leaves a gap a tool can slip into. Custom shapes can be rounded, oval or echo the brand graphic
- Colour and material: matt silver, gloss silver, clear and white each read differently; clear is the least obtrusive but where tag information or a barcode must be hidden, choose white or translucent with a window
- Storage and delivery: for rolls, state the roll diameter, core and unwind direction for machine application; adhesive surfaces dislike heat and UV, so keep them away from windows and heavy stacking
- Optional security features: microtext, fluorescent ink, thermochromic graphics and random codes can be combined to budget; for export orders, first check whether the destination market requires filing or disclosure of security markings
6. Application and Acceptance: Don't Break Them in the Warehouse
- Timing: apply after the final packing check; sealing before bagging means fitting, tidying and inspection reopen it repeatedly, so the batch looks already opened before it ships
- Trial first: run 20 to 50 trial applications across substrates and temperature conditions, check initial tack after 24 hours and peel behaviour after 48 hours, and only then approve the artwork
- Write the acceptance criteria: specify substrate, adhesive type, message clarity, peel force, roll diameter and quantity on the order so that disputes about a faint message or messy residue are settled by specification, not argument
- Manual versus machine: hand application suits small volumes; at higher volume consider an automatic labeller, which requires agreeing roll spec, unwind direction and line speed in advance
