Garment Trims Certifications Guide: OEKO-TEX, GRS and FSC Made Clear

More and more apparel brands now ask at the inquiry stage: 'Do you have OEKO-TEX? Can you issue GRS documents? Is the hang tag paper FSC-certified?' Eco-certification requirements used to be reserved for big customers; today even DTC brands and e-commerce sellers ask for them routinely. For suppliers, certificates have moved from 'nice to have' to 'entry ticket'. For buyers, if you are not sure what each of the three certifications covers, you either overpay or end up with a document you cannot use. 1. What Each of the Three Certificates Covers

Remember one line: OEKO-TEX is about safety, GRS is about recycled content, FSC is about forests. The three focus on completely different things and cannot replace each other — which one a brand demands depends on the product and the claim.

2. For Woven and Care Labels: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Is Most Often Named

Woven labels and care labels sit directly against the skin, so underwear, kids', sportswear and safety-minded brands often require OEKO-TEX Standard 100 on trims. It tests against a list of restricted harmful chemicals and ranks products in classes I–IV, with class I (baby items) the strictest. Note: certification is issued per product or material, not as one blanket 'factory certificate'. Confirm that the certificate covers your exact product category and class, and verify the certificate number in the official OEKO-TEX database.

3. Recycled Trims: GRS Checks Content and Chain

Whenever a product claims to be 'recycled', more and more buyers require GRS certification: it verifies the recycled-content percentage (claims must be real and auditable) and the chain of custody — from recycler and yarn mill to weaving and finishing, every step is audited by a third party so 'recycled' is never just a slogan. For trims, the common cases are recycled-polyester woven labels, recycled-PE bags and recycled-paper hang tags. Without GRS, a supplier's word that 'the material is recycled' rarely survives a brand's social-compliance audit.

4. Paper Trims: FSC Labels and the Printer's CoC

FSC-certified paper carries one of three labels: FSC 100%, FSC Mix and FSC Recycled. To print the FSC trademark on hang tags or paper bags, the printer or bag maker must hold an FSC chain-of-custody certificate (CoC), and the paper used for that order must fall within its scope. Confirm two things when inquiring: whether the paper itself is FSC certified and whether the printer holds a CoC — miss either link and the finished product cannot legally carry the FSC mark.

5. Checking Supplier Certificates: A Checklist

• Validity: is the certificate current? (these schemes are usually re-audited yearly)
• Scope: does the certificate list the product category you are buying — hang tags, woven labels, care labels, poly bags or paper bags?
• Verifiability: the standard number, certificate holder and issuer must appear in official public databases (OEKO-TEX and FSC both offer lookup tools)
• Shipment documents: confirm the bulk order comes with the CoC transaction certificate or test report number, so documents match the goods
• Material consistency: the sealed sample and the bulk run must use the same certified material — never sample with certified stock and switch materials in production

6. State Certification Requirements at Inquiry Stage

The earlier you state certification needs, the more accurate the quotation and lead time: name the scheme (OEKO-TEX and its class, GRS and content level, or FSC label type), the products involved, and whether shipment documents are required. Materials, finishing and certification scope interact — adding a certification at the last minute usually means changing materials, extra testing and waiting, adding cost and delaying delivery.
