Fabric swatch cards and fabric sample books are the everyday tools apparel brands, fabric mills and buyers use to present a fabric's hand feel, colour and weight. Compared with an emailed photo, a physical swatch lets the customer touch the texture and check colour deviation in natural light — a decisive step in winning the order.

This guide walks through the common formats, card stock options, fabric attachment methods, printing techniques, MOQ and sampling, so you can specify a swatch card or sample book with confidence.

1. Four Common Formats of Swatch Cards and Sample Books

  • Single hang card — one card with one to three fabric pieces, often hung on a sample garment or display rack; ideal for a hero fabric
  • Folded swatch card — bi-fold or tri-fold, with fabric on one panel and specs and brand information on the other; good for display and for keeps
  • Swatch book — multi-page bound booklet, ideal for dozens to hundreds of colourways in one season and the fastest format for buyers to browse
  • Ring-bound swatch set — punched cards on a ring, easy to flip through and to extend with new colourways later; popular with fabric mills

2. Choosing the Right Card Stock and Material

Card stock Suggested weight Best for Notes
Coated / matte art paper 300–400 gsm Standard swatch cards, inner pages Excellent colour reproduction; matt or gloss lamination available
Solid bleached board 250–350 gsm Premium cards, branded hang cards High stiffness, consistent colour on both sides
Kraft paper 200–300 gsm Eco-minded, natural-look brands Pairs well with soy-based inks for a greener story
Duplex board with grey back 300–400 gsm High volume, cost-sensitive projects Low cost; only the coated side suits fine printing
PVC / plastic card 0.3–0.8 mm Waterproof, hard-wearing working swatch cards Rigid feel; reusable over the long term

3. How to Attach the Fabric to the Card

Attachment method Notes Best for
Double-sided tape Lowest cost, fastest to produce Small sampling runs, internal use
Heat sealing / hot-melt adhesive Secure and neat; the mainstream choice in bulk Official sample books, shipments to customers
Stitching or staples Very durable, withstands repeated handling Working swatch cards for long-term use
Hook-and-loop fastener Fabric can be swapped for easy seasonal updates Mill books, internal selection
Sandwich mount / die-cut window Fabric sits between two card layers or shows through a window Premium brands, snag-prone fabrics

4. Printing and Finishing Options

The branding printed on a swatch card matters more than you might expect — customers keep these cards for years, so it works like long-life marketing collateral. Brand logo, contact details and range information all deserve proper design.

  • Four-colour printing — reproduces fabric photos and colour blocks; suitable for most swatch cards
  • Spot colour (Pantone) — use it when the brand colour tolerance is tight; more stable than four-colour builds
  • Foil stamping and embossing / debossing — adds a premium touch; ideal for the brand logo or range name
  • Die-cutting and punching — custom outlines, rounded corners, hang holes and binding holes in one pass
  • Lamination — matt film resists fingerprints, gloss makes colour pop; soft-touch film is also available

5. MOQ, Lead Time and Sampling

Swatch cards are custom printed items, so pricing depends mainly on card stock, size, page count, ink colours and finishing. A single hang card can often start at a few hundred pieces; multi-page books cost more because of binding and hand-applied fabric. Sampling usually takes 3–7 days and bulk production 10–25 days, depending on the process mix and quantity.

💡 Tip: Confirm three things before ordering — who supplies the fabric, whether a spare swatch should be mounted on the card, and whether pages will be added each season. Many projects are delayed by fabric shipping and stocking, not by the printing itself.

6. Checklist Before You Order

  • Card stock type, weight and whether lamination is needed
  • Size and shape, plus whether a hang hole or binding holes are needed
  • Number of fabric pieces and their size, who supplies the fabric and whether spares are needed
  • Printed content and brand colours (spot colour or not), plus whether a barcode or QR code is required
  • Binding method, packing method and export labelling requirements
