1. Legal Framework: Spanish, Importer ID and Durability
Chile's consumer protection law (Ley 19.496) requires truthful information on use, composition and country of origin at the point of sale, understandable in Spanish. Imported goods also need the importer or responsible party identified for after-sales and recall traceability. Enforcement is led by the national consumer service (SERNAC), and checks can be triggered by retail inspections or consumer complaints.
- Language — consumer-facing key data in Spanish; bilingual is fine, English-only is not
- Responsible party — name of the importer or manufacturer, usually with local tax ID (RUT) or an address
- Durability — composition and care must be sewn in or durably attached; a label that falls off or becomes unreadable is treated as missing

3. Proving Durability: A Three-Wash Test
The Chilean standard is that the information must remain readable in real use, so how the label behaves in the wash decides compliance. We test labels on the actual garment at sampling stage rather than judging a flat print proof.
- Method — wash three times under the conditions printed on the label (including drying), then check for fading, fuzzing and frayed edges
- Process choice — coated satin printing is wash-resistant with sharp type; woven tape suits small text and multiple languages; paper is for hang tags, not mandatory data
- Placement — side seam or centre back; hem and waistband labels rub repeatedly and wear out faster
4. Sizing: Marking Talla Alongside International Sizes
- Dual sizing — Chilean retail mixes S/M/L/XL with numeric sizes, numeric being common in womenswear; weaving both the local and international size into the neck label cuts down on returns
- Size chart — The size chart must match real garment measurements; Chilean shoppers complain often about online sizes running small, so publishing chest and waist measurements sharply reduces disputes
- Childrenswear — For childrenswear, mark a height range (for example 2-3 años / 98-104 cm) — far clearer than a bare S/M/L
5. Care Text in Spanish
Care symbols generally follow the international system (ISO 3758), yet symbol recognition in South America is limited. Symbols plus a short Spanish line is the safest combination and passes retail checks more easily.
- Useful Spanish lines: Lavar a mano; Lavar a máquina a 30°C; No usar blanqueador; No secar en secadora; Planchar a temperatura media; Lavar en seco
- Functional fabrics — Functional fabrics (water-repellent, coated, heat-transfer prints) must avoid high ironing and tumble drying, otherwise the coating cracks and the after-sales claim is on the brand
- Same label — Keep care text on the same durable label as the composition, so shoppers never see fibre content without washing guidance
6. Special Categories: Underwear, Swimwear, Childrenswear
- Underwear and next-to-skin — soft label edges to avoid itching; satin woven labels or heat-transfer tags work best; sizing and composition must survive frequent washing
- Swimwear — needs chlorine and light resistance; care text should state No usar secadora and Enjuagar con agua fría después del uso
- Childrenswear and baby — cords, small-part security and saliva colour fastness are the usual concerns; label the age range and, where relevant, add safety wording, and pull-test tag pins and fasteners
7. Import Paperwork and Carton Marks: One Story Everywhere
- Consistency — Origin, product name and composition on the label must match the invoice, packing list and customs paperwork — inspectors check against documents
- Carton marks — Carton marks should carry style number, colour, size, quantity, country of origin and importer ID for smooth warehouse sorting and retail replenishment
- Origin certificate — Origin certificates and duty savings: China and Chile have a free trade agreement, so importers can claim preferential duty with a certificate of origin — the exporter supplies the supporting documents
- E-commerce — Online channels fall under the same consumer rules: product pages should show composition, origin, size chart and care instructions, with a clear returns policy
8. Sampling and Production Checklist
- Confirm Spanish wording, importer RUT and product name with the buyer, and that compliance responsibility sits with the importer
- Compile composition percentages for all components plus fabric test results (shrinkage, colour fastness)
- Choose label process and placement, sample first, then run the three-wash test before signing off
- Cross-check label, hang tag, carton marks and invoice for the same origin, name, composition and style number
